What is Chrisma?

The New Testament was penned in Greek. The word “chrisma” is a Greek word translated in the King James version of the Bible as “anointing” or “unction”.
Chrisma literally means: an unguent or smearing. By reading this in 1 John 2:20 we can understand it better.
20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things. (NKJV)
This means that every believer has an endowment or gift from the Holy Spirit of God to know the mind of God. This gift is like an anointing oil that is smeared on the spirit of the born again believer. This gift is the Spirit of the living God inside of you!
We see this amazing truth further explained in verse 27 of the same chapter.
27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him. (NKJV)
This means that God has given us the power to know the truth from a lie. He will also teach you anything you need or desire to know. We can live without fear because we know that he is in us and with us, always ready to lead and direct us when we look to Him. And if that’s the case….who can be against us? In other words, who can beat God?
So living the “chrisma life” is living an abundant and blessed life of increase and goodness as the Spirit teaches you how; all this by the grace of God who gives us His son.
